Expanded search
In addition to standard searches, the Carmen on-line catalogue offers so-called expanded searching. The option of an advanced or combined search is available in the on-line catalogue header.
Advanced search
- Department
- Select department or item type to filter your search (for example “books only,” “in the music department,” etc.).
- Title
- Title of the document. If you do not know the entire title, enter a partial title.
- Author
- Name of the author (in the form of surname, first name) or name of the entity (musical group, institution).
- Subject
- A word or phrase that expresses anything. The subject includes keywords and subject headings.
- Keyword
- A keyword or phrase that expresses the subject or area that relates to the requested item (i.e. field, geographic name, literary or musical genre, etc.).
- Publisher/Volume call number
- Volume call number is important primarily for A/V media
- Any field
- The catalogue searches all sections of the records, including, for instance, genre, comments, etc.
Combined search
Combined searches allow for a more complex search and research using a combination of conditions to be selected. Each condition is made up of three input fields for submitting the query. The first column contains the types of data according to which you may search for records in the library’s collections. The entries in the second column govern the relationship between the data and the search values. You can select the relationship from the drop-down menu. The number of choices in this list changes based on the information in the first column. In addition to standard choices such as Equal, Contains, etc., it also offers relationships such as Does not start with, Not empty, and Empty. The final part of the condition in the third column is a search textbox for entering the value according to which you would like to search for your document. You can enter 5 different conditions using the logical operators “and” (searches for documents that satisfy all entered conditions) and “or” (searches for documents that satisfy at least one entered condition).
For example, you are searching for an AAA book edition (Anglo-American Author editions) published after 2005 by the publisher, Argo.
Edition – equals – AAA

Year of publication – greater than – 2005

Publisher – equals – Argo
